SLSA are seeking a dedicated Media and Communications Coordinator to join our dynamic team. We are looking for someone who can positively contribute to the overall communications strategy, objectives and requirements of the team and the SLSA business overall.

Surf Life Saving Australia (SLSA) is Australia's peak coastal water safety, drowning prevention and rescue authority.

With 193,009 members, of all age groups and demographics across 315 affiliated Surf Life Saving Clubs (SLSCs), SLSA represents the largest volunteer movement of its kind in Australia.

Since Surf Life Saving was established in 1907, over 670,000 lives have been saved. In 2021/22 our Surf Life Saving active members were involved in 8,916 rescues, 58,342 first aid treatments and more than 1.63 million preventative actions. Surf Life Saving volunteers carried out more than 1.31 million patrol hours.

Job Description

The purpose of this role is to oversee and manage media activities throughout the business, ensuring that these efforts are effectively coordinated across all departments. This involves creating and implementing relevant content that is timely and suited to the needs of both internal and external stakeholders, spanning media, marketing, digital platforms, and events. Additionally, the role requires the development and maintenance of strong, positive relationships with various states to support cohesive and productive communication.

This role is based in the iconic Icebergs building at Bondi Beach. We offer a hybrid work model that combines the best of both worlds - the vibrancy of a beachside workplace and the flexibility of remote work.

Your expertise will shape our strategic direction and operational efficiency, directly impacting our innovation, growth, and the maintenance of SLSA's iconic Australian brand.

Key Responsibilities:

• Identify media opportunities across all internal departments
• Develop appropriate, relevant and timely media content and releases
• Develop all necessary media material for all SLSA events and activities
• Regularly liaise with external PR contractors to understand, develop and support all media and PR opportunities
• Proactively manage and engage with media on a regular basis, in conjunction with external PR contractors
• Maintain up to date media database
• Develop monthly and event, media and PR plans
• Coordinate and manage media for all SLSA Events
• Coordinate and manage athletes, lifesavers, officials and other media talent as required.
• Manage Media Monitoring Service and distribute appropriate content regularly to all relevant stakeholders
• Develop media reports quarterly and/or as required
• Coordinate photography requirements including photographers and briefs for SLSA events as activities
• Manage and ensure SLSA photographs are utilised and filed appropriately
• Regularly liaise with States to understand, support and enhance state media opportunities as well as share SLSA content and information
• Develop written speaking notes as required for SLSA Staff and Officials

Internal Content & Communications
• Develop appropriate written content across all areas of the business for media, website, social and other channels as required.
• Assist with the coordination and development of SLSA Publications and marketing materials.
• Provide relevant content to the Club’s internal content schedule as required.
• Assist with the financial and budget management of relevant media and communications requirements
• Positively contribute to the overall Communications Team and business requirements

External Stakeholders
• Develop and maintain positive proactive media relationships.
• Develop and maintain positive proactive working relationships with the States.
• Ensure verbal and written communication with stakeholders, both internal and external is appropriate and timely.

Our ideal candidate will have:

1) Qualifications:

• Tertiary qualifications and/or equivalent relevant experience in the areas of Public Affairs, Communications and Media.

2) Knowledge and Experience:

• Strong written communication skills
• Knowledge of the media landscape
• Experience in media management
• Experience in content development across a range of platforms including written, video and digital

3) Skills and Attributes:

• Professional and articulate communicator, both written and verbal,
• Attention to detail, quality and process,
• Ability to work both independently and as part of a team,
• Ability to work outside of traditional office hours as required,
• Confident and calm under pressure,
• Ability to show initiative, prioritise competing work demands and meet deadlines.
